helppillsnutiritonWhat is emotional eating? Emotional eating is something that happens to almost everyone at some time or another in life. Everyone, both male and female have at one point or another, felt sad or angry or anxious and reached or a plate of cookies or maybe it was pasta.

Whatever the food you probably know what I’m talking about. It happens to everyone. There are, however, some who do this on a daily basis. The trouble with emotional eating is that it may show up on the scale but it begins in the mind. Stress takes its toll on your life. When your defenses are compromised your health takes a hit and so do your emotions.

Everyone has good days and bad days. How we address the bad ones can cause an emotional roller coaster within that causes us to eat to avoid the pain. You look for comfort from your pain. People who turn to food to find comfort find a coping mechanism that seems to make them feel better.

That is the main problem and what makes this method of “dealing so much a problem is that eating pleasurable foods can stimulate the release of endorphins just like exercise. So, after you eat, you feel better.
But, how do you know you are using food in this way?

The first sign is obvious. You will gain weight if you eat too much. In light of the weight gain, examine other areas of your life:

* Have you been under stress lately at work or at home?

* Are the people in your life supportive of you and what you do?

* Has anything traumatic happened in the last year?

* Do you eat when you are not necessarily hungry but more when you are stressed, sad or anxious?

Answering “yes” to any of these questions could mean that you are an emotional eater. The foods that you choose are what we term “comfort foods”:

* High fat foods like French fries, fried foods

* High carb foods like pasta, rice or mashed potatoes

* Sugary foods like cookies, ice cream, cake, donuts and candy

Recognizing that you may have a problem is the first step to conquering it. At first, you may have to alternate your foods because cutting them out altogether may not work, when you notice yourself reaching for that treat that you really don’t need, try to get a glass of water or some carrot sticks. Of course its hard! You are used to a whole different way of life. But if your reading this then you obviously want to do something about it so you must try and try and try until you succeed.

Secondly, seek counseling. If the emotional issues are deep or dark you may need to seek counseling to help with the root of the problem, there is nothing wrong with this. You can not always talk to your friends or family and they are usually not trained to help you get to the base of your problem so if you think this is needed please do it. You want to be a better you and sometimes that means you need a little help from an objective, and highly trained individual to cut through to the problem before you can solve them or learn to live with them in a healthy manner.

Thirdly, many times you can rely on your friends or family. They can learn what triggers your eating habits and be on the lookout for changes in them. They can help you be aware of the foods you are eating, assist you in making healthy food choices and exercise along with you. Proper diet and exercise increases immunity, blood flow and positive thinking. Yoga enhances the mind/body connection so you don’t eat when you aren’t hungry.

If you are overweight, many times this alone can leave you feeling depressed, inadequate and cause very low self esteem and trigger emotional eating. Prior to eating you may convince yourself that you don’t care and that your over weight anyhow but immediately after you may experience a deep regret and self loathing for eating the way you just did. Our mind can play tricks on us and sometimes we are our own worst enemies when we try to justify what we are about to do.
